Our Programs

Powell Elementary is an award-winning community school focused on academic success for all. Students demonstrate academic achievement through portfolios, performances, and assessments. Through our Dual Language program students have the opportunity to become bilingual while acquiring the skills they need to succeed in a global society.

Dual Language

The Dual Language program provides students at least 50 percent of their instruction in another language. At Powell, we currently offer the Spanish Dual Language program. Curriculum is designed so that instruction in Spanish builds upon instruction in English and vice versa. Students who complete our Dual Language program will have the foundation to be bilingual and biliterate, while also achieving academic success and cultural competency.

Early Childhood Education

The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool is one of the most widely used pre-K curricula in the nation, including our early childhood program here at Powell. It is comprehensive, research-based, research-proven, and it features exploration and discovery as a way of learning — as well as bilingual!

Social-Emotional Learning

Social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. SEL is an integral part of learning at Powell, embedded into the classroom. We also believe SEL is a lever for equity, helping to create caring, just, inclusive and healthy communities that support all students in reaching their fullest potential.

after school

Powell hosts a DCPS after school program that allows students to participate in academic and extracurricular enrichment activities and to develop new hobbies and skills. DCPS teachers, paraprofessionals, and community-based organizations provide a variety of unique programming options to students. After school is open to serve students in PK3 through grade 5.
